Buchempfehlung Clara Stolze: Albertally Becky "Love Simon"

Even though “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda” is only five years old it is already viewed to be a classic by many LGBTIQ+ people and their allies. The book itself, written by Becky Albertalli and published 2015, was praised highly. This was only topped by the admiration the movie received (directed by Greg Berlanti) that first streamed in the cinemas 2018. Since then the story of Simon and his secret email-pen-pal Blue has warmed thousands of hearts.
After Blue posted a beautiful poem on the school’s tumblr Simon sent Blue an excited email. What started as a simple mail has developed to much more. In their daily email-exchange Simon and Blue share dreams and hopes, tell each other of their family problems, of their fears and despairs. And with each mail, they fall for each other even more. While Simon’s world keeps becoming more chaotic by the day, their emails are his anchor point. But even this safe haven comes to be problematic when Martin, a fellow student at Simon's and Blue’s High School, discovers their emails. He threatens to publish them unless Simon sets him up with his friend Amy. Suddenly, Simon has to face the eventuality of being outed without his own consent. Even more, the trust of Blue and consequently a possible relationship are at stake if the mails are published.
At the hands of Becky Albertalli we follow Simon on his journey. With the effortlessness of a teenage love novel she portrays a meaningful story of full-fledged characters. While including important aspects, such as blackmail or unconsented outing, Albertalli also manages to create a comfort bubble with depth. She offers us a unique love story without falling into the trap of worn-out tropes for gay characters and their stories. After all, maybe this is the reason for its big success: “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda” is everything we want from a teenage romance: affectionate, comfortable and full of pleasantness.
